Pride Month is here. Are you an Ally in Gaming? Ask how to serve best

šŸŒˆšŸŽ® Pride Month is Here: Are You an Ally in Gaming? Here’s How to Serve Best

Pride Month is a time of celebration, education, and solidarity—and the gaming community is no exception. Whether you’re in the middle of an online match or enjoying your favorite RPG, being an ally to LGBTQ+ players means more than just showing support during Pride Month; it’s about fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment all year round. But while the intention behind being an ally is often rooted in kindness and respect, sometimes it’s easy to miss the mark. So, how can you truly be a good ally in gaming?šŸ¤”šŸ’–

ā“The First Step: Ask, Don’t AssumešŸ¤

One of the most important ways you can serve as an ally in gaming is by asking the people you support how to do so best. It’s easy to think that you know what someone needs, but each person’s experience is unique. Allies sometimes assume they know what terms, actions, or behaviors are most helpful, but these can vary from person to person. šŸŽ®šŸ’¬

For example, I have a nonbinary adult child who’s also a gamer. When we talk about gaming together, I’ll check in and ask, ā€œHow would you like me to address your gender, or would you prefer I don’t bring it up at all?ā€ or ā€œIs it okay if I use your pronouns, or would you prefer if I didn’t in-game?ā€ Simple questions like these show respect for their identity and ensure that I’m supporting them the way they want to be supported in their gaming experience.šŸ‘¾šŸ’–

🚫Avoid the Pitfall of Trends and AssumptionsšŸ’¬

The gaming world has its own language, and sometimes it can be easy to follow trends or adopt terms and actions that seem popular. However, just like in other parts of life, the latest gaming lingo or ally trends don’t always align with every individual’s experience or preferences. Being an ally isn’t about following what’s currently ā€œcoolā€ or using the buzzwords that everyone else is using—it’s about being thoughtful and considerate in your actions.šŸŽ§āœØ

Don’t assume that what works for someone else will work for the person you’re supporting. For example, just because a certain gender-neutral pronoun or term is trending within the gaming community doesn’t mean it’s right for everyone. And while you may want to be an ally who always says the right thing in-game, the truth is you’re not expected to be a mind reader.šŸ’

The best way to avoid assumptions in gaming is to ask questions and listen closely. Understanding that allyship involves adapting to others’ needs—whether it’s how they prefer to be addressed or what kind of support they need in a multiplayer setting—will make your efforts more meaningful.šŸŒŸšŸ‘‚

šŸ’–Creating an Inclusive and Respectful Gaming SpacešŸ•¹ļø

Being an ally in gaming goes beyond just the big gestures like posting Pride-related content on your social media. It’s also about the little things—the way you interact with others in voice chats, how you respond to toxic behavior, or how you support inclusivity in your favorite communities. It’s about understanding that creating an inclusive space isn’t just for Pride Month; it’s about building a gaming environment where everyone feels safe and respected year-round.šŸŒšŸ¤—

So, as we celebrate Pride Month, take a moment to reflect on how you can be the best ally in gaming. Whether you’re playing single-player or teaming up for co-op games, ask yourself: How can I make this experience more welcoming? And remember, being a great ally isn’t about getting it perfect—it’s about being open, asking, and always being willing to grow and adapt. šŸŒ±šŸ’Ŗ

Happy Pride Month to all the gamers out there! Let’s continue to build supportive, inclusive, and respectful spaces—whether we’re conquering dungeons, battling it out in the arena, or just having a good time with friends. Together, we can create a gaming world where everyone feels they belong.
