Mind Over Media

Games, Songs & Shows/Movies That Shine a Light on Mental Health

🎮✨ MIND OVER MEDIA ✨🎧

Ever find yourself explaining your mood by referencing a character?
“I feel like I’m in my BoJack era.”
Or maybe, “Today is very Celeste on the mountain.”
🎮🎵📺 It’s not just fun — it’s a way to communicate, and honestly, it’s kind of brilliant. 💡💜

In this series, we’ll explore how geeky fandoms — video games, music, and TV — help us better understand mental health. We’ll highlight media that:
✔️ Expresses emotional and mental health experiences
✔️ Features characters we can actually relate to
✔️ Tells modern, progressive stories of healing, struggle, and growth
✔️ Brings us together to talk about mental health in a more open, supportive way 🫂

Let’s start with a sneak peek — and then dive deeper together 🎉

🎮 Games That Feel Like Therapy

Not every video game is about blasting enemies or collecting coins. Some dive deep into emotional territory and explore mental health through gameplay. 🎮🧠

💡 Celeste – A literal climb up a mountain, facing anxiety, self-doubt, and identity struggles. Platforming and personal growth, all in one.
💡 Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice – A powerful journey through grief and psychosis. The visuals and audio drag you into the character’s mind, making it feel real.

🎲 We’ll dig into other games that explore trauma, depression, healing — and even therapy sessions — all while you’re playing.

🎶 Songs That Speak Your Soul

You know those songs that hit you so hard you stop everything and go, “Whoa, I feel SEEN”?

Yeah, I feel that. 💔🎧

🎵 Unsteady – X Ambassadors – A haunting ballad about broken families, and the children who still want to feel safe.
🎵 Hi Ren – Ren – A theatrical dialogue between self and shadow that’ll have you laughing, crying, and questioning everything.

Music speaks the language our feelings sometimes can’t. In future posts, we’ll break down lyrics that normalize mental health, share playlists, and maybe even find your next emotional anthem.

📺 Shows & Movies That Get It

TV and movies? Pure storytelling magic. But when they tell our stories, it hits even harder. Whether it’s a show guiding you through anxiety or a film finally naming what you’ve been feeling, that’s powerful stuff. 🍿

🎬 BoJack Horseman – A messy, raw dive into addiction, trauma, and self-worth — with a surprising philosophical twist.
🎬 Inside Out –  Emotions as literal characters? Pixar nails emotional literacy while somehow making you cry.

We’ll dig into more modern stories that tackle mental illness, growth, and stigma — with empathy and depth. Be sure to have tissues on hand… and maybe some popcorn too.

💬 Why Fandom Feels Like Family

When you can’t quite explain your feelings, sometimes you can just say, “It’s giving Zuko-in-season-3 energy,” and someone gets it. 🔥😅

That’s fandom. It gives us a shared language. Whether you connect through cosplay, Twitch, playlists, or deep-dive Reddit threads, fandoms provide safe spaces to express, understand, and grow.

💡 Together, we’ll explore how character arcs show emotional resilience, how storylines normalize therapy and healing, and how shared media sparks real conversations about mental health. 🧠💬
